93. Portage Des Sioux
This is one of the region's many hidden treasures. There are lots of little features which are easy to miss. Along the 184 yard walkway are plaques commemorating the historical features of the site. The statue and pedestal at the end of the walkway combine to form this 45 foot tall Shrine of Our Lady of the Rivers. The fiberglass statue was completed in 1957. There are symbols built into the wrought iron railings as celebrations, too. And, there is a button attached to a speaker. The guy tells a story that's at least ten minutes long about the shrine and the area. And because it's very quiet out there, we could still hear him talking when we got all the way back to the car.
After visiting the cake and shrine in Portage, we got on the Grafton Ferry. How cool is it to drive your CAR onto a BOAT!? Cakelet thought it was pretty neat.
94. Aerie's Winery
So when the ferry crosses into Grafton, look up. WAAAY up. This winery is way, way up at the top of the hill. Everything was all closed up, the drive up and back down was a little thrilling.
95. Pere Marquette State Park
We went for a short hike on the blue path at Pere Marquette State Park. It was just right for Cakelet. And then we ate the Pere Marquette Lodge. Cheese sandwich! (what else?)
