A lovely birthday party out west (Happy Birthday Layne!) gave us an excuse to pick up three cakes in St. Charles and Warren counties.
170. Fort Zumwalt Park
The cake at Fort Zumwalt Park sits in front of the Darius Heald Home, built in 1884. The park is also home to Zumwalt's Fort, built in 1798, a refuge for local families during the War of 1812. The Christmas lights on the tree represent the annual Celebration of Lights held at the park, a huge collection of holiday displays, which brings over 10,000 visitors each year.
171. Warren County Courthouse
Warren County was established in 1833, named after General Joseph Warren. It is the west most cake and county in the great cake hunt.
172. Ameristar
Ameristar Casino in St. Charles opened in 1994. This cake, located in a major corridor within the casino compex, celebrates what might appear to be an odd collection of items: an interstate, a president, and a bible story.
Noah's Ark was a roadside attraction restaurant just across I-70 from where the casino now stands. Missouri is one of three states who claims to be the first site of the interstate system. The Interstate Highway System was authorized by the Eisenhower Administration's Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956. The first contract signed was for upgrading a section of US Route 66 to what is now designated Interstate 44. On August 13, 1956, Missouri awarded the first contract based on new Interstate Highway funding, this work began on US 40 (now I-70) in St. Charles County. (Wikipedia)
