When you're four, cake-hunting is hard work. It requires patience and flexibility, so...
We found five cakes in Clayton on Sunday, bringing our total to 22. This was our last day out before we learned we are not supposed to climb on the cakes. Oops.
18. Shaw Park
18. Shaw Park
We had to make a trip to the mall first. It was May Fourth, so the Disney store was giving out inflatable light sabers. This cake is painted to match the large water park at Shaw Park. This was a neat cake. We were parked in a no parking zone, so we skedaddled.
19. The Giant Shoe at Brown Shoe Company
Of course I'd seen this giant shoe at Brown Shoe Company before, but it surprised me to learn that it was made of metal shoes. I guess I thought they were canvas or something. Anyway, Cakelet was very impressed by the "high heel made of high heels!" There were several other people waiting to take photos, so we didn't examine that cake very long. We did, however, try on the giant shoe. It didn't fit.
20. St. Louis County Courthouse
This one is nice. It's got the St. Louis flag all over it, and what appears to be Lewis and Clark on the base. This would be a good time for some local info, especially for the non-St. Louisans. St. Louis city is an independent city; that is, it is not contained within any county. There are 41 independent cities in the United States, 38 of which are in Virginia. The others are Baltimore, Carson City, and St. Louis. Most of the cakes you will see on this blog are actually not in the city of St. Louis. Many are in St. Louis County, and there are plenty scattered across other counties, too. The next time you hear that St. Louis is the Xth most dangerous city, just remember that doesn't reflect where the majority of those of us who identify as St. Louisans actually live, but represents only a small geographic and population minority (basically just the downtown area and a relatively small surrounding zone).
21. Centene Corporation
I really like the art of this cake. Centene is a health plan provider, founded in St. Louis in 1984. Around the base of the cake are all the states where they have plans.
22. Historic Hanley House
Historic Hanley House is the oldest dwelling in Clayton. This was a farmhouse surrounded by 100 acres of farm. Martin Hanley purchased the farm in 1847 for $750. He and his wife Cyrene Hanley raised 10 kids on the property. Hanley Road is a major north-south road in St. Louis County.
This is another pretty cake. It's on a large tree stump in the front lawn of the property. I think they should turn it so you can see the house behind it. The house is to the right of this photo.

And once again, we visit a place only to find out it's closed. If only there was a way to find out the hours of these places beforehand...
There was a volunteer or employee here who very nicely let us in to see the exterior kitchen, but we didn't really get any good photos inside.
228 to go.
